On the surface, a wastegate seems to be the best of both worlds; that is the turbocharger turbine housing and wheel can be sized small enough to obtain boost off of idle without over boosting at higher speeds. Maximum boost pressure is controlled by diverting exhaust gas around turbine housing at high power demands. At light loads or cruise conditions, however, all of the exhaust gas must pass through the turbine. Unfortunately, to achieve boost off of idle with acceptable smoke, the turbine housing and wheel must be sized extremely small! That combination causes very high exhaust back pressure resulting in a negative boost to back pressure relationship. This means that this the exhaust back pressure is higher that the intake manifold pressure (boost). The result is that the engine suffers from high pumping losses (poor efficiency) and high exhaust temperatures at vehicle cruising speeds. A 10-15% reduction in fuel economy is the penalty paid for utilizing a high restriction wastegate system in contrast to a correctly sized non-wastegated turbocharger system. The Hypermax Pulse Turbocharger System takes a different, more efficient approach to achieve boost off of idle. The Pulse System with its dual inlet pipe/turbine housing and low restriction 3 1/2" diameter exhaust system utilizes the pulse energy created upon exhaust valve opening to provide almost instant boost off of idle. A positive boost to back pressure relationship is maintained throughout the engine's operating range. Low exhaust back pressure with Pulse Turbocharging makes the Hypermax System the most efficient, highest horsepower turbocharger system on the market today! |
